At least 15 disgruntled members of Kathorus renowned anti-crime unit, Thatha-Zonke abruptly departed this week.

Some of those who tendered their resignations includes executives members and two commanders. Before they left, rumours were doing the rounds that certain members are working tight with syndicates and criminals.
Thatha-Zonke was established by ordinary community members to work as the watchdog to combat drugs and any other form of criminality in the neighborhood.
The unit works close with the law enforcement. They have numerous success stories in fighting crime, drugs and apprehending criminals.
It is alleged in the unit certain individuals grant a tip-off to drug lords about operations.
Speaking on behalf of Thatha-Zonke, Njabulo Khumalo said they cannot confirm nor deny the allegation level against their members.
He said occasionally the unit get tip-off from residents about criminal elements which are occurring but when they arrive at the crime scene the evidence would be cleared.
“If there is anyone from the community or parted members who has evidence that current members or former members are working with criminals, they should come forward. We will conduct investigations and call all those implicated to the disciplinary committee to encounter or hand them to police,” he added.
Despite withdrawal, he said there is no bad blood between them and those who resigned as they call each other on a numerous occasion.

Khumalo said if [former members] want to come back they will welcome them with open arms.
“When the unit was established, we had 200 members but the number went down and currently stand at least 65. The numbers were bound to reduce as we have different concept and destinations. Some got jobs, and others started their own businesses,” he explained.
Khumalo revealed that it is for the first time that they have experienced mass exodus of this nature.
He further thankinged all former members who served the organisation “diligently and dedicated” their resources in the fight against crime.
