The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) has strongly condemned the robbery of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel at the Evaton base.

This incident highlights the ongoing issue of criminal activity targeting healthcare workers as they perform their duties within communities, where they are vulnerable to being robbed of their belongings.

The department emphasized the need for increased protection for these essential workers who serve the public in critical situations.

According to reports, on Friday morning, around 02h15, two armed suspects unlawfully entered the Evaton Emergency Medical Services (EMS) station.

During the breach, departmental spokesperson Steve Mabona reported that several items were stolen, including a jump bag, a drug bag, a communication radio, an employee’s personal cell phone, and ambulance key.

“Furthermore, during the incident, a male crew member sustained a head laceration after being assaulted with a firearm, and a female crew member was threatened at gunpoint.

Case registered following Evaton base robbery

“The female crew member successfully escaped and activated the vehicle’s siren, causing the suspects to flee the scene. The department has since opened a robbery case at the local police station for further investigation.

“An injury on duty has been registered for the injured crew member, and trauma counselling services have been provided to the affected employees,” he expressed.

Mabona urged local communities to collaborate with law enforcement agencies by sharing any information that could aid the police in apprehending perpetrators of crime.
