The Democratic Alliance(DA) in Johannesburg has welcomed councillor Mpho Phalatse’s resignation from the party and says her departure will be ‘sorely missed’.

The former Johannesburg mayor resigned as the DA PR councilor and announced that she’ll be pursuing private business ventures with the healthcare sector.
Devon Steenkamp, the party’s caucus spokesperson said throughout her tenure, Phalatse exhibited dedication and commitment, serving diligently as a leader of the main opposition.
“While Phalatse will be sorely missed in her official capacities, we are gratified to share that she remains an unwavering member of the DA. Her decision was made in the best interest of her personal and professional growth, and we fully support her endeavours.”

In her resignation letter, Phalatse said she was motivated by the desire to serve when she came into politics in 2016 but that came at a huge sacrifice.
“I left my medical profession and thriving business in order to contribute to the rebuilding of my country. The last seven years of my service as a councillor have been a fulfilling experience. It has been such a great honour to serve, notably very few people have enjoyed the privilege at such short notice,” she expressed.
Phalatse added that the changing political and economic climate have necessitated that she embark on a process of introspection and reflection regarding her future as a councillor.
She continued; “After months of in-depth reflection and consultation with my family, I have come to the conclusion that as a qualified medical doctor with vast experience in healthcare and beyond, I could make a better, meaningful and valuable contribution elsewhere”.
Phalatse’s last day in council will be September 30. However, she remains a member of the DA.
