'Be alert' - PRASA on fraudulent 'annual subscription' scheme
PRASA has urged the public to be alert to a fraudulent scheme currently circulating on social media.

The scheme falsely advertised an “annual subscription” travel card for Metrorail customers.

The scam according to the rail agency claims that for a payment of R56, customers can receive a travel pass offering unlimited annual train travel.

“Metrorail advises members of the public that no such offer exists,” warned spokesperson Andiswa Makanda.

According to Makanda, PRASA emphasises that the official sale of tickets is conducted exclusively at train stations and onboard trains.

She added; “Metrorail does not offer any annual subscription services or passes. No such program exists and neither Metrorail nor the government has any association with it.

“The photographs of the travel card clearly point to its fraudulent nature because in South Africa the word ‘subway’ is not used.

“The fake photographs have been created by criminals attempting to deceive and defraud unsuspecting members of the public.”

Makanda urged all Metrorail customers to be vigilant and cautious.

Cooperation in combating fraudulent activities

“Please do not engage with or respond to any offers or promotions that do not originate from official PRASA channels.

“If you encounter any suspicious activities or offers, report them immediately to PRASA or your nearest police station. Passenger rail is already South Africa’s safest and most affordable means of transport.

“Your safety and security are our top priorities. We appreciate your vigilance and cooperation in combating these fraudulent activities,” she remarked.

To conclude, Makanda highlighted that Metrorail does not offer any annual subscription services or passes and if an offer seems too good to be true, it almost certainly is.
