5 suspects arrested, one fatally wounded during a business robbery

Five suspects were arrested and one fatally wounded during a business robbery that occurred in the early hours of Tuesday at a filling station on the Old Johannesburg road in Wierdabrug area. 

Gauteng police spokesperson, Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said, the SAPS crime prevention members were on duty with CPF patrollers when they heard an explosion of which they quickly responded to.

“Upon reaching the area of explosion they were met with a group of men shooting at them. The members retaliated, shooting one of the suspects who was later declared dead at a local hospital.

“Five suspects were chased and arrested while an unknown number of other suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash.

“The group reportedly robbed the convenience store first before bombing an ATM. A 9mm pistol with a filed off serial number, detonators and cigarettes were also recovered on the scene,” she explained. 

Nevhuhulwi stated that the five suspects aged between 29 and 38 years old are expected to appear before court soon on charges of business robbery and possession of unlicensed firearm.

Man arrested for alleged attempted murder

Meanwhile, a 33-year-old man has been arrested for alleged attempted murder following the assault of his girlfriend.

According to Free State police spokesperson, Sergeant Palesa Thabana, the complainant informed the police that she was at a tavern with her boyfriend on Saturday, at 02:00, when they were approached by an unknown male who requested to speak privately to her boyfriend.

Thabana said the girlfriend further alleged that during their conversation she overheard the unknown male saying to her boyfriend, Tshepiso Mofokeng “you can have her”.

“Thereafter her boyfriend came back and forcefully grabbed her before he allegedly started to assault her. He pulled her outside and drove off with her into the bushes, where he continued to assault the victim.

“He allegedly bumped her with his vehicle and, while on the ground, drove over her. She sustained several serious injuries. He drove with her to the hospital, where he dropped her off,” Thabana expressed.

Mofokeng was later arrested and appeared in the Virginia Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

He remains in custody pending further police investigations.
