An inmate serving a 20-year sentence for robbery, theft and possession of firearm with ammunition has escaped from Boksburg correctional centre.
The department of correctional services (DCS) confirmed that Martin Jackson, admitted on 10 April 2015, ‘found his freedom’ on Wednesday, under circumstances currently under investigation.
“We are working with other law enforcement agencies to locate and apprehend the escapee,” said DCS spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo.
He stated that they have mobilised resources and will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that Martin is rearrested and brought back to justice.
Nxumalo urged the public to remain vigilant and called upon anyone with information on the escapee’s whereabouts to contact the nearest police station or a correctional facility.
He added; “We also advise members of the public not to approach the escapee if spotted, as he may be dangerous.”
Meanwhile, a 27-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his 28-year-old girlfriend at Makwane Village in QwaQwa.
It is alleged that the accused, Msize Phillemon Makhanya, of Phahameng section burned the late Roseline Nfalleng Motjala body beyond recognition inside the house in which they lived in.
According to Free State police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring, on 19 November 2023 at about 05:15, the neighbour was awakened by a house that was on fire.
“He collected water trying to distinguish the fire, but it was stronger than he anticipated. Other community members came to assist until the Maluti-a-Phofung Fire Department arrived and put out the fire.
“The police and ambulance personnel were on the scene and found the body of a person burned beyond recognition.
“While on the crime scene, the accused suddenly appeared and told the gathered community that he set the house alight with his girlfriend inside.
“The body was removed and a murder case was investigated. The suspect was arrested the same day and charged with murder,” he explained.
