ActionSA parliamentary chief whip, Lerato Ngobeni has written to minister Leon Schreiber seeking clarity on how Chidimma’s mother was permitted to leave South Africa and travel to Nigeria.

This is despite the ongoing fraud and corruption investigation.

In August, the department confirmed that it uncovered evidence of fraud in its ongoing investigation into the citizenship of Chidimma who was one of the Miss SA contestant.

“Prima facie reasons exist to believe that fraud and identity theft may have been committed by the person recorded in Home Affairs records as Chidimma Adetshina’s mother.

“Adetshina could not have participated in the alleged unlawful actions of her mother, as she was an infant at the time when the activities took place in 2001,” a statement read.

According to Ngobeni given the nature of the investigation, which involves circumventing immigration controls, it is reasonable to expect that any travel would be restricted, especially to Nigeria.

“As highlighted in the June 2022 report by the Ministerial Committee on the Issuance of Permits and Visas, of the 36 647 fraudulent applications detected, 12 177, or one-third, originated from Nigerians, underscoring the scale of the problem.

ActionSA believes these alarming figures highlight widespread efforts to undermine South Africa’s immigration regime and sovereignty.

“Therefore demands that the government not take a lax approach to enforcing our laws, especially when fraud is uncovered, as in the case of Chidimma Adetshina’s mother,” she stated.

Meanwhile, following her crowning, the 23-year-old law student told reporters after the event that; “This journey has been a tough journey for me, and I am so proud of myself. I’m really grateful for the love and support I’ve received.”

Adetshina’s victory is seen as a triumph over adversity, and she is now set to represent Nigeria at the Miss Universe pageant in Mexico later this year .
