Promoter Boxing 5 is once again bringing out the big guns, staging a blockbuster rematch that promises to deliver fireworks and expected to showcase an action-packed bout that will captivate fans.

A fierce heavyweight rivalry is set to reignite as Thompson and Potgieter prepare to settle unfinished business in a national title showdown. When the bell rings in Brakpan, there will be no more talk.

Reigning SA heavyweight champion Thompson (16-6-1) returns to defend his crown against the relentless Potgieter in a high-stakes 12-round main event.

Potgieter made a major statement in 2024 when he dismantled Keaton Gomes to end his reign as champion, firmly establishing himself as a force in the division.

According to the promoters, their first encounter was explosive, and this rematch carries even greater significance.

“This time, it’s about more than just the belt. Pride, power, and national bragging rights are all on the line as two heavyweights prepare to settle unfinished business,” the statement read.

Thompson will be determined to solidify his reign and cement his status at the top of the division, while Potgieter returns focused, dangerous, and hungry for redemption.

Fans can expect heavy hands, sharp tactics, and a championship battle that delivers from the opening bell. Thompson has already etched his name into the record books as only the second South African boxer to win an International Boxing Association (IBA) belt.

He outboxed Russia’s Georgiy Yunovidov over eight one-sided rounds to claim the IBA heavyweight title at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Philippines, last year.

The first South African to achieve this feat was the late Jacob “Baby Jake” Matlala, who captured the IBA flyweight title with a dominant victory over Michael Carbajal in Las Vegas on July 18, 1997.

Now Thompson must break that cycle or become its latest victim. Only one man will leave with the belt.

Unlike many champions, Thompson did not have an amateur background. He began his career in white-collar boxing, a path followed by several South African fighters. Before stepping into the ring, he played junior provincial rugby for the Sharks.

He made his professional debut on May 26, 2017, defeating fellow newcomer Joshua Pretorius on points. In June 2022, Thompson claimed both the ABU African and South African heavyweight titles in just his 15th professional fight.

However, his reign was short-lived, as he lost the belts in his first defence to Keaton Gomes at the “Young Guns” tournament at Emperors Palace on December 11, 2022—exactly six months after winning them.

Still, he can take some consolation in the fact that none of the fighters who have held the South African heavyweight title over the past two years have managed a successful defence.
