As South Africa observes the significant milestone of 50 years since the Soweto Uprising, the Midvaal Local Municipality marked this historic event by opening a brand-new Multipurpose Centre in Lakeside.

This facility stands as a testament to the resilience and history of the community, serving as a hub for various activities and events, thus fostering social cohesion and development in the region.
According to Idah Satikhe, senior media officer from the office of the executive mayor, the Lakeside Multipurpose Centre has been a long-term project aimed at delivering modern sports facilities for the community.
She emphasised that the Centre is is expected to significantly improve community engagement and encourage an active lifestyle across various age groups.
The centre’s wellness investment
This initiative signifies an investment in the health and wellness of local residents, providing them with access to state-of-the-art amenities that foster both recreational and competitive sports activities.
“The facility forms part of the municipality’s commitment to nurturing talent and providing safe, accessible recreational spaces where young people can remain positively engaged.
“The Mayoral Youth Games, an initiative of Executive Mayor Alderman Peter Teixeira, aim to nurture and celebrate sporting talent across Midvaal’s communities.

“Now in its fifth year, the games have become a highlight on the municipal calendar, bringing together young athletes from across Midvaal to compete for honours, community pride and sporting recognition,” she stated.
The day was further marked by a variety of sporting codes, including soccer, netball and chess, as well as a kickboxing demonstration, where young athletes showcased their talent, passion, and sportsmanship in netball, soccer, chess, and basketball.
