Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) has appointed Dr Gloria Serobe as its new Chancellor.

In accordance with its statute, the institution said ‘Tomatoe’ (as Dr Serobe is otherwisely known) will hold this position for an initial period of four years, from the date of her appointment.

Dr Serobe holds a BCom degree from the former University of Transkei and an MBA degree from Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA. 

Speaking about Dr Serobe, Corporate Affairs and Marketing personnel at TuT, Phaphama Tshisikhawe said she is a highly accomplished and well-respected businesswoman and a pioneer in the field of broad-based economic empowerment for women.

“Few South African business leaders have had the wide and positive impact Dr Serobe has had on the participation of women in the South African economy.

“Through her role as one of the co-founders of Women Investment Portfolio Holdings (Wiphold) – the first women’s group established post-1994 to list on the JSE – Dr Serobe has distinguished herself as one of the foremost champions for women’s economic empowerment and emancipation,” she .

Tshisikhawe stated that Dr Serobe’s socially entrepreneurial business acumen has been acknowledged through her appointment into several non-executive board directorships in a variety of sectors, including but not limited to the banking, insurance, mining, security, as well as in the tourism field.

She added; “Her contributions as a member of the Presidential Economic Advisory Committee and a member of the Presidential Working Group for Women have cemented her place as a thought-leader in the creation of sustainable economic empowerment models. 

“Acknowledging her astute resource stewardship, President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed Dr Serobe to head the Solidarity Fund in March 2020 to drive the economic recovery, revival and revitalisation following the harrowing recessionary impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As the institution we are honoured to have such a distinguished South African as our titular head and Chancellor. We wish her a successful tenure as Chancellor of this auspicious University.”
