A pastor and his wife, who reportedly went missing were found in Evaton, south of Johannesburg, on Monday evening.
Phillip Mashudu, 55, and Elsie Matlou Mashudu, 54, left Bethlehem on Friday to attend a church conference in Parys.
According to police they were stopped by suspects impersonating police officers in full uniform.
A provincial task team was established and worked around the clock with their counterparts to follow up on all leads, Free State police spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele confirmed.
He stated that the couple’s vehicle was found in Sebokeng on Sunday, but they were nowhere to be found.
“A breakthrough was made while searching and tracing the couple last night that led to the arrest of three people in Sharpeville.
“Further investigation by the team led to a house in Evaton where a fourth suspect was arrested. The couple was found unharmed at the said address.Â
“Police confiscated several bank cards at the address, as well as a substantial amount of cash and a toy gun,” Brig. Makhele explained.
The male suspects aged 31 and 41 will appear in the Sasolburg magistrate court on Thursday, facing charges of hijacking and kidnapping.
Meanwhile, police minister, Senzo Mchunu has commended the women and men in blue following the successful rescue and said he is pleased that the victims were found in a physically stable condition.
“This incident is a stark reminder of the challenges we face in our ongoing efforts to maintain public safety however, it is also a testament to what can be achieved when our police service acts with resolve, diligence, and integrity.
“We extend our gratitude to all the teams involved; your unwavering commitment and professionalism have not only brought about a successful resolution to this case but have also restored a sense of security and faith within our community.

“The safety and security of every citizen remain our top priority. We will look into the allegations of possible involvement of police officers and where there are police officers implicated, we will take action,” he added.
The minister highlighted that corruption within the SAPS will not be tolerated and urged anyone with information to come forward and assist the police.
